Virginia’s first adult high school opens in Roanoke

ROANOKE, Va. (WDBJ) – History will be made in Roanoke Monday as Virginia’s first adult high school opens its doors at Melrose Plaza.
The Excel Center will welcome its first class of adult students, offering a pathway to earn a state-recognized high school diploma. Unlike a GED, the program is designed to mirror the traditional high school experience, with accelerated coursework and added support such as free childcare, life coaching, career counseling and job placement assistance.
For students like Amanda Santana, that support makes all the difference.
“It’s a dream come true,” Santana said. “It means the world to me and it’s something I’ve been looking forward to for a lot of years. I am super excited.”
