LUNENBURGCOUNTY,Va.—ThenumberoffamilieschoosingtohomeschooltheirchildreninVirginiaisincreasing,withnearly63,000studentslearningfromhomeduringthe2024-25schoolyear,accordingtoareportfromtheHomeEducatorsAssociationofVirginia(HEAV).
“Homeschoolingallowsyoutotailoritforeachchildastheyastheyneedit,”explainedShannonLewis,aLunenburgCountyresident.
Lewishasbeenteachingherfourchildrenathomeformorethantwodecades,beginningatatimewhenhomeschoolingwasmuchlesscommoninherarea.
“22yearsago,therewerenootherpeopleinLunenburgthatIknewtherewerehomeschooling,”shesaid.“Theinternetwasaround,butitwasn’twhatitistoday.”
TheLewisfamilyinitiallychosehomeschoolingforreligiousreasonswhentheiroldestsonwouldhavestartedkindergartenandhascontinuedthiseducationalpathforallfourchildren.
“Whatworksforonedoesnotalwaysworkfortheother,whichispartofthebeautyofhomeschooling,”saidLewis.
