STAUNTON,Va.(WSET)—OnWorldDrowningPreventionDay,theCentralShenandoahHealthDistrict(CSHD)isremindingfamiliesthatresidentialpoolsaretheleadinglocationforaccidentalpooldrowningsinchildrenunder15. Officialssaidtheyareencouraginghomeownerstoensurethattheirpoolshavepropersafetyfeaturesinplacetohelpreducetheriskofdrowningorinjury. AccordingtotheU.S.ConsumerProductSafetyCommission,70%ofpoolorspadrowningsinchildrenundertheageof15occurredinresidentialsettings.Thatnumbergrowsto85%forchildren0-5yearsold,officialssaid.
