Virginia’s Rappahannock River ranks sixth among America’s most endangered rivers of 2025

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (7News) — The Rappahannock River has been named one of America’s most endangered rivers of 2025.
American Rivers ranked the Virginia river number six on the list, citing dropping groundwater levels, rising demand, and a lack of water supply planning.
Environmental experts said extreme weather, drought, and growing industries are putting too much strain on the river.
“TheRappahannockisalifelineforboaters,fishermen,andwildlife,”saidCongressmanRobWittman(R-VA).“Itiscrucialthatwetakemeaningfulstepstoensurecleanwaterandpromoteconservation.AsvicechairmanoftheHouseNaturalResourcesCommittee,I’vebeenproudtospearheadnumerouseffortstopreserveourwaterways,includingthroughmyChesapeakeBayConservationAccelerationActandmyAmerica’sConservationEnhancementReauthorizationAct,whichwassignedintolawlastyear.WemustalldoourparttoprotecttheRappahannockRiverandouragriculture,seafood,andtourismindustriesthatrelyuponit.”
