RICHMOND,Va.—(AP)—DaysafterajudgesentencedaVirginiapoliceofficertoprisoninthefatalshootingofanunarmedmanaccusedofstealingsunglasses,thestate’sRepublicangovernorgrantedthefiredofficerclemency,meaninghewon’thavetoservefurthertimebehindbars.
WesleyShifflett,36,wassentencedFridaytothreeyearsinprisonafterhewasconvictedofrecklesslyhandlingafirearmduringtheFeb.22,2023,shootingofTimothyMcCreeJohnson.Thejuryacquittedhimofinvoluntarymanslaughter.
Gov.GlennYoungkingrantedShifflettclemencyonSunday,removinghisprisonrequirementbutkeepingintacthisfelonyconviction.
“Iamconvincedthatthecourt’ssentenceofincarcerationisunjustandviolatesthecornerstoneofourjusticesystem—thatsimilarlysituatedindividualsreceiveproportionatesentences,”Youngkin,aRepublican,saidSunday.Inhisstatement,YoungkinreferredtosentencingguidelinesrecommendingnoincarcerationforShifflettthatwereproposedbyaprobationandparoleoff
