Youngkin directs Virginia State Police and prisons to cooperate with ICE

RICHMOND—Gov.GlennYoungkinannouncedThursdayanexecutiveorderthatwouldmakeVirginiathelateststatetoreviveadecades-oldprogramthattrainsanddeputizesstateandlocallawenforcementtoquestionpeopleabouttheirimmigrationstatusanddetainthemfordeportation.
Theexecutiveorderdoesthreethings.First,itdirectsVirginiaStatePolicetosetupataskforceoflawenforcementtrainedanddeputizedbyU.S.ImmigrationandCustomsEnforcement,meaningtheywouldbeabletointerrogateanddetainpeoplechargedwithacrimeandsuspectedofbeingintheUnitedStateswithoutproperdocumentation.
ItalsodirectstheVirginiaDepartmentofCorrectionstocooperatewithICE,allowingICEofficialstousedetentionandprocessingfacilitiesthroughoutVirginiaandtotraincorrectionsofficerstoactasimmigrationenforcement.Finally,itdirectssheriffsandotherlawenforcementofficialstocertifytheywillcooperatewiththeabovedirectives.
