Tougher academic standards ahead for Virginia students

Virginiastudentsmaysoonfacetougheracademicbenchmarksasthestatealignsitsperformancelevelswiththehigherstandardsofanationalassessment.
Startingnextmonth,theVirginiaBoardofEducationwillbeginadjustingitscutscores—usedtodeterminewhetherK-12studentsaremeetingproficiencylevels—tobettermatchtherigoroftheNationalAssessmentofEducationalProgress(NAEP).
Studentperformanceistypicallycategorizedas“belowbasic,”“basic,”“proficient”or“advanced,”reflectingtheirknowledgeandskillsincoresubjects.
Since1998,VirginiahasreliedonitsStandardsofLearning(SOL)assessmentstogaugeproficiencyinareaslikereadingandmath.However,NAEP,awidelyrecognizednationalorganization,hasoftenbeenusedtoassesssmallerstudentgroups,suchasfourthandeighthgraders.
