Virginia activists say Clean Economy Act is under attack

More than 150 environmental activists rallied Monday at the Bell Tower on Capitol Square to say Virginia’s clean energy goals are under attack and need to be defended.

More than 150 environmental activists rallied at Capitol Square’s Bell Tower Monday to say Virginia’s clean energy goals are under attack and need to be defended.
More than 20 pieces of legislation filed during the General Assembly session aim to repeal or weaken the 5-year-old Virginia Clean Economy Act, said Connor Kish, director of the Sierra Club Virginia Chapter.
Gov. Glenn Youngkin has said the act is not working, arguing that Virginia needs to use all kinds of energy, including natural gas, a fossil fuel, to generate electricity because of the state’s soaring demand for power.
“It is driving up rates, driving down reliability, and constricting our economic growth,” Youngkin said in his State of the Commonwealth address.
