Senate Democrats on Tuesday scuttled the entire tax relief package Gov. Glenn Youngkin proposed.
They voted to kill his plan for tax credits to offset the cost of the local car tax for some Virginians and set aside his push for a deduction of tips from taxable state income in favor of broader tax relief they promised in the budget they will unveil on Sunday.
The Senate Finance & Appropriations Committee endorsed the recommendations made earlier by a powerful subcommittee on resources for the state budget, deferring action on more than a half-dozen proposals by the Republican governor.
Those included: extension of higher standard deductions for state income tax filers; a higher threshold for late fees on estimated tax payments; and removal of the $40,000 cap on exempting military retirement income from state tax. It also killed the governor’s proposal for different tax treatment of companies that operate in multiple states.
