Named for Georgia college student killed by undocumented immigrant, bill allows ICE to take undocumented immigrants into custody if they’ve been arrested or charged with theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting.

U.S. Rep. Euguene Vindman, D-7th, cast his first legislative vote Tuesday opposing a measure named for a 22-year-old college student from Georgia murdered last February by an undocumented immigrant.
House Republican leadership groups criticized the local congressman for his no vote on the Laken Riley Act, saying it’s a vote against public safety.
Vindman said in a statement he is “disappointed Republican House leadership did not provide for any opportunity to negotiate to improve the bill and chose to start with partisan politics over lowering costs for families.”
The 10-page bill, headed to the U.S. Senate for a vote, House Resolution 29, allows ICE to take undocumented immigrants into custody who have been charged with or arrested for theft, burglary, larceny or shoplifting. Details on local law enforcement and detainment, if enacted, are still to be formalized.
