Virginia Wesleyan students find ways to address heat in Portsmouth, Virginia’s 2nd-hottest city

PORTSMOUTH,Va.—PortsmouthranksasthesecondhottestlocationinVirginia,accordingtoastudyfromtheNationalCentersforEnvironmentalInformationthatcompiledfindingsfromcitiesandcountiesthroughoutthestate.
Now,agroupofgraduatestudentsandprofessorsfromVirginiaWesleyanUniversityishopingtochangethat,onetreeatatime.
Theinitiative,called“CoolDownP-Town,”ispartofalargersustainabilityresearchprojectfocusedonreducingextremeheatacrossthecity.Dr.ChrisHaley,aprofessorofearthandenvironmentalsciencesatVirginiaWesleyan,saidtheteamisidentifyingurbanareasthatcouldbenefitmostfromtreeplanting.
“Ifwecouldfindanareawherewecouldplantalotoftrees,thatwouldbegreat,”Haleysaid.
OneofthoseareasincludeseasternCalvertManor,whichresearchershaveidentifiedasoneofthehottestneighborhoodsinthecity.AnotherisColumbiaPark,wheretheresearchteammetrecentlytocollecttemperaturedataandobserveinfrastructure.
