PORTSMOUTH,Va.—PortsmouthranksasthesecondhottestlocationinVirginia,accordingtoastudyfromtheNationalCentersforEnvironmentalInformationthatcompiledfindingsfromcitiesandcountiesthroughoutthestate. Now,agroupofgraduatestudentsandprofessorsfromVirginiaWesleyanUniversityishopingtochangethat,onetreeatatime. Theinitiative,called“CoolDownP-Town,”ispartofalargersustainabilityresearchprojectfocusedonreducingextremeheatacrossthecity.Dr.ChrisHaley,aprofessorofearthandenvironmentalsciencesatVirginiaWesleyan,saidtheteamisidentifyingurbanareasthatcouldbenefitmostfromtreeplanting. “Ifwecouldfindanareawherewecouldplantalotoftrees,thatwouldbegreat,”Haleysaid.
