Virginia man to pay thousands after harvesting rare root in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park

MIDDLESBORO, Ky. (WVLT) – A Virginia man will pay thousands and spent a month in jail for harvesting a rare root in Cumberland Gap National Historical Park, according to the U.S. justice department.
Coby Brummett was sentenced for harvesting ginseng, also known as “green gold.” The root sells for a high price, and it’s not uncommon for people to make a living selling it.

That being said, collecting the root is a federal offense.

“Preserving natural and cultural resources like these on behalf of current and future generations of Americans is a central part of our mission,” said Cumberland Gap National Historical Park Superintendent Lisa Baldwin. “We are proud of the work of our staff and partners that led to this outcome.”
Investigators said Brummett dug up more than 300 ginseng roots from within the park. He was ordered to pay $6,240.25 in restitution.
