Virginia Attorney General to enforce new social media restrictions for minors

CHARLOTTESVILLE,Va.(WVIR)–AttorneyGeneralJayJonesispledgingtousehisofficetoenforceVirginia’ssocialmediarestrictionsonchildrenundertheageof16.
TheAGannouncedthisweekthatitwillgoaftersocialmediaplatformsthatarenotincompliancewiththeVirginiaConsumerDataProtectionAct,whichlimitsminors’useofsocialmediatojustonehourperday,unlessaparentchoosestoincreasethetime.
“TheAttorneyGeneral’sofficewillcommunicateevidenceofnon-compliancedirectlytocompaniesandprovide30daystoremedytheviolationasrequiredbylaw,”theAG’sreleasereads.“Iftheycontinuetoviolatethelaw,theAttorneyGeneralwillfileenforcementactions,whichcouldresultinupto$7,500incivilpenaltiesforeachviolation,aswellasinjunctiverelieftostopviolatingsocialmediaplatformsfromcontinuingtheconductinviolationofthelaw.”
