Food bank demand surges as grocery prices climb in Virginia

CHESTERFIELDCOUNTY,Va.—TheChesterfieldFoodBankOutreachCenteronIronBridgeRoadcontinuesservinghundredsoffamiliesweeklyasgrocerycostsandrecenteconomicchallengesdriveincreaseddemandforfoodassistance.
Nearly800clientsattendedanemergencyfooddistributionaheadofJanuary’swinterstorm,withregularweeklydistributionsstillservingaround600people.
“We’restillseeingstrongnumbers,butIwillsaythatcomparedtothegovernmentshutdown,thosenumbersaredownjustalittlebit,”saidNicholasJenkins,thefoodbank’scommunityoutreachandcommunicationsdirector.
PantryManagerJoanneJonessaidhighergrocerycostsandmountingbillshavekeptherbusyfillingbagsoffoodforpeopleinneed.
“Ithoughtafterthegovernmentshutdownthatthingswouldkindofeasebackdownandgoatamoreevenpace,butitseemslikeit’sevenincreasedmore,”Jonessaid.
TheU.S.BureauofLaborStatisticsshowedthepriceoffoodathomepurchasedatthegrocerystoreclimbed29.4%betweenMarch2020andDecember
