Gov. Youngkin signs ‘sextortion’ bill into law

GovernorGlennYoungkinhassignedDelegateWendellWalker’s‘sextortion’billintolaw,strengtheningprotectionsagainstsexualextortionintheCommonwealth.
“Today’ssigningsendsapowerfulmessagethatthosewhoexploitandmanipulateothersfortheirowngaininVirginiawillfaceseriousconsequences,”saidDelegateWalker.“Nooneshouldeverhavetochoosebetweenaroofovertheirheadandtheirdignity.IamdeeplygratefulforLynchburgCommonwealth’sAttorneyBethanyHarrisonforherinvaluableassistanceincraftingandpassingthislegislation.”
Thenewlawclassifiesmaliciousthreatsofeviction,financialloss,orpropertydamageusedtocoercesexualactsasaClass5felony.Itspecificallytargetslandlordsorpropertymanagerswhopressuretenantsbythreateningtheirhousing.
Additionally,thelawalsoincreasespenaltiesforadultscommittingtheseactsagainstminors,withsentencesrangingfromoneto20yearsandfinesupto$100,000.
