Virginiahas45daysofearlyvoting,oneofthelongestinthecountry.Andeveryyear,Republicansofferlegislationtorollbackthatwindow.ButthoseeffortsarerejectedtimeandtimeagainbyDemocratswhocontroltheGeneralAssembly.
“Asyoucanimagine,manyofourconstituentsthroughouttheCommonwealthareworkingnumeroushours,”saysSenatorAaronRouse,aDemocratfromVirginiaBeachwhoischairmanoftheSenatecommitteethatoverseeslegislationonvoting.“So,lesseningthosedaysshortenstheopportunitiestomakesurethosememberswhoareworkingthose40plushoursaweektheopportunitytovote.”
But45daysofearlyvotingistoomuch,saysDelegateChadGreen,aRepublicanfromYorkCounty.Hesaysit’sjusttooexpensive.
“Itcostseachjurisdictionroughly$2,000aday,”Greensays.“So,whenyouadditallup,it’saconsiderablecosttothecitizensintheCommonwealthtoanumbersomewhereinthebestofmycalculationsbetween$4millionand$8million.”
