Central Virginia speed cameras generate millions in fines, but some parents question effectiveness

RICHMOND,Va.—JohnSarvayhasspent12yearsnavigatingbusystreetstogethischildrentoandfromRichmondPublicSchools.Ashepicksuphisfifthgraderafterthefourthdayofschool,he’sfrustratedthatspeedingremainsapersistentproblemdespitenewenforcementmeasures.
“We’vegot12yearsofcrossingthisbusystreet,”Sarvaysaid.“Evenwiththecrosswalkandthesignthatsaysstopforstatelawandthecamera,westillhavepeoplerollingthroughathighspeeds,notstoppingforpedestrians.”
WhileSarvayadmitsthecamerasareastepintherightdirection,hequestionstheireffectivenessinchangingdriverbehavior.
“Ithinkpeoplejustsortofgointoautopilotwhentheydrive.Alotofpeoplejustreallynotpayingattention—they’refocusedonwherethey’regoing,they’refocusedontheirradio,they’refocusedontheirphone,whateveritis,”hesaid.
