StartingJuly1,largefoodvendorsacrossthestatewillnolongerbeallowedtousesingle-useexpandedpolystyrene,aplasticfoammaterialcommonlyreferredtobythebrandnameStyrofoam.Thatincludesplates,cups,bowls,traysandhingedcontainers.
Statelawmakerspassedthebanfouryearsago,followingtheleadofotherssuchasMaryland,NewYorkandWashington,D.C.Implementationwasdelayed.Gov.GlennYoungkintriedunsuccessfullytopushitfurtherthroughaproposedbudgetamendmentearlierthisyear.
Fornow,itonlycoversfoodvendorswith20ormorelocationsinVirginia,includingrestaurants,grocerystores,foodtrucksandcaterers.
ThelawalsoappliestoschoolsandcommunitygroupsthatusefoodprogramssuchastheNationalSchoolLunchProgram.
NextJuly,thebanwillexpandtoallfoodvendorsinVirginia.
