Virginia lawmakers buck Youngkin budget amendments in one-day session

RICHMOND,Va.(AP)—VirginialawmakersaddressedscoresoflegislativevetoesandamendmentsfromRepublicanGov.GlennYoungkinonWednesday,includingthegovernor’s205revisionstothestate’sbudgetbillthatweredecisivelynixedbytheDemocratic-ledGeneralAssembly.
Theone-daysessioninRichmondcomesafterYoungkinvetoed158billsthatblockedDemocrats’attemptstoreintroducelegislationnearlyidenticaltowhattheyproposedunsuccessfullylastyear.Healsoamendedabout160others.
Manyofthegovernor’s205amendmentstotheVirginiaHousebudgetbillwouldhavetrimmedtheproposedstatespendingprovisionsapprovedinFebruaryinfavorofadding$300millioninadditionalfundstoVirginia’scoffersontopofnearly$295millionalreadyslatedtobesetasideoverthebiennium.
Youngkin’sedits,however,werelargelyrejectedbyDemocratswieldingpowerinbothchambers,whoacceptedjust33ofYoungkin’sproposedbudgetrevisionsandscrappedtheremainingamendments.
