Governor amends Virginia’s budget bill to increase rainy-day reserves over changes in Washington

RICHMOND,Va.(AP)—RepublicanGov.GlennYoungkinsaidonMondaythathehopedtobolsterVirginia’srainy-dayfundby$300millioninlightofeconomicuncertaintysurroundingtheWhiteHouse’soverhauloffederaljobsanditsimpactonthestate’sworkforce.
Atanewsconference,Youngkinannouncedhehadmorethan200amendmentstoabipartisanbudgetbilladoptedlastmonthbytheVirginiaGeneralAssembly,includingtrimmingstatespendingtoaddadditionalfundstoVirginia’scoffers.
The$300millionwouldbeontopofnearly$295millionalreadyslatedtobesetasideoverthebiennium.YoungkinsaidthereservedrevenuewouldgiveVirginiaacushionof$5billion.
“Itenablesustofeelconfidentthatifthereisabumpintheroad,wecandealwithit,”hesaid.
Youngkin’sannouncementcomesafteramixofroughly1,000VirginianfederalworkersandcontractorshavefiledclaimsforunemploymentsincetheendofJanuaryafterPresidentDonaldTrumpandadviserElonMuskbegancuttingjobsandprogramsinWashington,stateoffici
