Virginia lawmakers push for harsher penalties for drug dealers linked to overdoses

LYNCHBURG,Va.(WSET)—Statelawmakersareadvocatingforstricterpenaltiesfordrugdealersconnectedtooverdoses,followingtherecentarrestofadealerinLynchburgforsellingdeadlylaceddrugs.
RepublicanDelegateWendellWalkeremphasizedtheseverityoftheissue,stating,“It’snodifferentthanjustgoingandkillingsomeoneonthestreetthere.Becausewealreadyknowthedamagethatdrugsdotoindividuals.”Walkerbelievesthatdealerslinkedtooverdosesshouldfaceharshercharges,suchasfelonyhomicide.“We’vegottomakesurethatthemessageissentthatthisisgoingtobeastrongfelonyoffense,”hesaid.
